PLP 2019 Profile: Erin Rice

Erin Rice, PLP Class of 2019Name: Erin Rice

Birthplace and/or where you grew up: Roanoke, Virginia

Where do you currently call home? Suffolk, Virginia

Occupation: Principal Consultant/Lobbyist

Favorite part about the job: I find tremendous enjoyment in utilizing my knowledge and expertise of Virginia's legislative process to resolve the most pressing issues facing our society. I take great pride when I can show my two young children my work to make Virginians safer. However, the most rewarding part of my job is working to enhance the health and safety of our firefighters and their families. I am continuously inspired by their unwavering courage and I consider myself lucky to have their trust to be their legislative advocate.

Your first job ever: Babysitting the younger kids in my neighborhood.

Favorite Book/Currently Reading: Currently reading Evvie Drake Starts Over as well as enjoying This Is How It Always Is on audiobook. Recently finished The Art of Racing in the Rain and highly recommend it!

Comfort Food: Buffalo Chicken Pizza, Thai Food and Peanut Butter Cookies

What’s playing in your car right now? Taylor Swift. Don't hate. Her music makes me happy!

Addicted to podcasts? What are the top three you listen to? I love a good podcast to pass the time driving to Richmond. My top recommendations: 22 Hours: An American Nightmare, Marty Smith's America, and KCRW's Left, Right and Center.

Next journey? I will be traveling to Cincinnati in May 2020. I hope to visit all 50 states before I am too old and gray to travel. Ohio will make 20 states visited.

Favorite Virginia destination? Shenandoah National Park. The mountains of Virginia are truly beautiful and relaxing. I most enjoy being able to escape to areas where there is no cell phone service!

First political memory? Putting out yard signs for former Congressman Goodlatte. His daughter was a high school classmate of mine and we were promised pizza.

Best advice you ever received? You do not have to know all the answers. You just have to know where to find them.

If you could have dinner with anyone currently living, who would it be and why? Picking just one is hard, but I would probably say Laura Bush. I have always admired how gracefully she conducts herself and her passion for children's literacy.

One thing most people would be surprised to learn about you? I enjoy folding clothes. I generally always fold clothes while watching TV or a movie. It gives me time to separate from my phone and forget about the items on my to-do list.

Ambition, political or otherwise? While you may never see my name on a campaign sign, my desire is to end my career where it all started – in the Virginia Governor’s Office. It is my hope through my continued involvement in Virginia’s political process that down the road a newly elected Governor would recognize my career achievements and ask me to serve as a member of the Cabinet. There would be no higher honor for me than to be Chief of Staff or a Cabinet Secretary one day.

Favorite part about the PLP so far? My favorite part of the PLP is getting to learn about Virginia. The tours provide a first-hand look into many different regions and public policy areas. However, I have learned the most from my classmates. I truly enjoy the conversations and shared experiences. Each brings a unique perspective and different background that I have learned tremendously from throughout this program.
