College Leaders Program Class of 2016
Day 1: Saturday, June 11, 2016
Reported By: Kristen Walker, Spelman College
Hooray! Today was our first day in the Sorensen Institute College Leaders Program! Energy ran high as each participant appeared optimistic about the many opportunities and experiences that this wonderful program will offer over the course of these two weeks. It was a very exciting day full of introductions and orientation ground rules. After carrying all of our supplies and suitcases up to our rooms and stashing everything in their appropriate spaces, we headed down to the basement to receive a better understanding of the expectations and schedule that will be carried out in the days to come. Through a brainstorming activity focused on the structure of the current political parties and an entertaining Super Sorensen bingo game, we were able to focus on the mission of the College Leaders Program while connecting with our classmates in a positive and engaging manner.
Upon returning, dinner consisted of excellent barbecue food and conversation. It was wonderful to have Bob Gibson, Executive Director of the Sorensen Institute of Political Leadership along with Michael Signer, current mayor of Charlottesville, join us during this time. Mayor Signer discussed the current issues he's working on while on the City Council and the importance of hard work, determination, and engaging conversation in order to promote constructive and positive change within Charlottesville.
After all of these festivities concluded, we decided to have a night out on the town and drove to the Charlottesville Downtown Mall. The night scene in Charlottesville was definitely lively yet relaxing as we were able to get to know each other and the city even more over ice cream! Overall, the optimistic and exciting mood carried us throughout the day and I know that as we progress the days ahead will each bring their own unique and rewarding experiences!
