HSLP 2016: Day 9 - Sunday, July 17

High School Leaders Program, Class of 2016
Day 9: Sunday, July 17, 2016
Reported by: Michael Pang, Godwin High School and Claudia Gohn, Madison County High School

It was a very laid back, yet studious, day today in Bice House. After a long day participating in the General Assembly Simulation yesterday, everyone was able to sleep in this morning and wake up to a delicious brunch at 11:00 AM provided by Jason’s Deli. Brunch was served with sweet breakfast pastries, egg and sausage sandwiches, yogurt, hot coffee, and fresh fruit.

After a relaxing morning, students piled into the lounge for the “fundatory” activity. Everyone participated in trivia about our nation’s capital, past presidents, and Virginia’s political history. Afterwards, everyone participated in “Super Sweet Sorensen Bingo” and “Guess the Famous Virginian.”

After a fun-filled afternoon, students went back to their rooms to work on homework in their respective groups. Each group wrote advocacy letters to state senators, compiled annotated articles, and composed a press release. Some students, however, went down to the lounge to play FIFA 2016.

Dinner was served at 5:45 PM as usual with the menu being cornbread, black bean patties, grilled chicken breast, charcoal roasted corn, and nice, light salad. Afterwards, everyone started to work on his or her cumulative project.

At 6:30 PM, everyone took a break from work and either hung out with friends or went out for a pleasant walk on Grounds. At 7:00 PM, everyone reconvened in “The Tavern”—a student founded establishment in room 203—and continued to chip away at their load of work. For three hours, most people were dedicated into finishing their assigned work; however, everyone managed to find some time in between to talk to friends or play games. It was almost curfew when people started to wrap up their day’s work. Every group wrote approximately 15-20 pages worth of legislative proposals.

As Sunday turned to Monday, people returned to their apartments where they continued to party, dance, play games, or rest. At around 3:00 AM, most people were peacefully asleep, wondering what good memories will be made when the sun rises in the morning.
