HSLP 2019: Day 5

Aryanna Curry, Stonebridge School and Ben Skromne, Thomas Jefferson High School

Early this morning we were treated to the pleasant surprise of a Panera Bread breakfast, instead of the usual O-Hill Dining Hall. We then jumped onto a charter bus and headed towards Harrisonburg, where we met City Council member Richard Baugh and School Board member Kristen Loflin. Here, we had an engaging conversation about the city of Harrisonburg and how they tackle mental health challenges among students. After this, we made a short walk to lunch at Capitol Ale. Afterward, we took a short drive outside of the city to Cub Run Dairy Farm for a tour that followed up with an engaging Q&A session. Some highlights from this experience include seeing a newborn calf, modern milking machinery, and hearing about how much Gerald and Anita Heatwole have done to improve the treatment of their cows. After an exhausting day, we returned back to Gooch to begin working on our Culminating Policy Projects. Over dinner, the six groups deliberated on what their topics would be so that they could share their topics to focus groups tomorrow morning.
