PLP 2018 Profile: Holly Hazard

Name: Holly Elizabeth Hazard

Birthplace and/or where you grew up: New York, Pennsylvania, Sweden and Ohio

Where do you currently call home? Falls Church

Occupation: Senior Vice President, Humane Society of The United States

Favorite part about the job: First day of an animal rescue or disaster deployment with my staff, gearing up and walking into a dark, hot, stench-filled room, filled with sick or injured animals and, one by one, carrying them to safety--helping them begin the rest of their wonderful lives.

Your first job ever: Waitress in a diner

Favorite Book/Currently Reading: Currently reading Devil in the Grove by Gilbert King about the early advocacy of Justice Thurgood Marshall

Comfort Food: Can I say white wine? If not, raspberries.

What’s playing in your car right now? NPR

Addicted to podcasts? What are the top three you listen to? Pod Save America, S*Town, The Axe Files

Next journey? Netroots Nation conference in New Orleans

Favorite Virginia destination? Big Meadows Lodge, Skyline Drive, Shenandoah National Park

First political memory? Seeing Robert Kennedy waving on the back of a convertible, in a political parade in Fulton N.Y.

Best advice you ever received? From my mom: Don't ever tell your kids "Don't do that" unless you're prepared with consequences if they don't listen—even if they're lighting a match. They learned early that I mean what I say—and I've learned it works for adults as well. If I say something, I mean it. And you can count on it. Makes life easy for me and the people I work and play with.

If you could have dinner with anyone currently living, whom would it be and why? House Speaker Kirk Cox because I'm intrigued by his quiet demeanor and rise to power. I'd love to have a respectful, political conversation with any Republican and, especially one who has a background as a teacher.

One thing most people would be surprised to learn about you? I’m a (novice) rock drummer.

Ambition, political or otherwise? Yes.

Favorite part about the PLP so far? To the surprise of no one anywhere, Friday night caucus.
