Name: Tyvon “Ty” Bates
Birthplace and/or where you grew up: Richmond, VA
Where do you currently call home? Richmond, VA
Occupation: Political Director, For Our Future-Virginia
Favorite part about the job: I am a campaign guy and have been for a while. I don't work for candidates anymore and I love it. I get to work on the issues and build coalitions around those issues.
Your first job ever: File Clerk at Blue Cross and Blue Shield
Favorite Book/Currently Reading: Currently reading "Playing with Fire: The 1968 Election and the Transformation of American Politics" By Lawrence O'Donnell
Comfort Food: Eastern North Carolina BBQ Sandwich with Cole Slaw, Greens and Baked Mac & Cheese
What’s playing in your car right now? Sports Radio. I am a huge sports fan and it is my outlet to politics.
Next journey? Colombia, right after the election cycle. I need a getaway and get some stamps on my passport. I have a family member who took a job down there and I am going to tour everything.
Favorite Virginia destination? I love the water. The James River is one of my favorite destinations. From the Blue Ridge Mountains, where the water is crystal clear to the rapids in Richmond. Get out to Hampton Roads and do a little fishing. Love the James River.
First political memory? Phone Banking for Doug Wilder for Governor as an 8 year old. I have been at this for a long time. I remember walk around money.
Best advice you ever received? When you win, act like you have been there before. Then move on, there is always another fight to win.
If you could have dinner with anyone currently living, whom would it be and why? Obama and Biden. I know I am telling my political allegiance but so what. To see those two together and how they bond. That is true friendship and I just want to be around that positive energy.
One thing most people would be surprised to learn about you? People are always surprised that I am an only child. So when we have Friday Night Caucus I fight for everyone to participate in it. I don't want people to feel left out and also, we have been put together to be a small family.
Ambition, political or otherwise? I want to play my small part in this experiment called the Commonwealth of Virginia and make it better than it has been. We have a lot of history that has not been good, and we have to right some wrongs. I want to be a part of that change.
Favorite part about the PLP so far? Friday Night Caucus, it time you really get to know your classmates and what their aspiration are in Virginia Politics. It is also the time when those complex issues become less complex because we disarm ourselves from our biases and can have a real conversation about the issues. It is like our new age smoke-filled rooms figuring out solutions to make Virginia better.
